Living in the Quad CitiesThe Quad Cities metropolitan region is comprised of the riverfront cities of Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa, and Moline, East Moline, and Rock Island in Illinois. The area is situated along the Mississippi River in western Illinois and eastern Iowa and lies midway between Minneapolis to the North, St. Louis to the South, and is approximately 165 miles from Chicago to the West. The region is served by Interstates 80, 88 and 74 and several major state highways, as well as the Quad City International Airport.Since the 1800’s, when the great Sauk warrior Black Hawk and his tribe ceded their land to the United States, when John Deere built his plow factory that has become the backbone of the agricultural industry in the Quad Cities and the world, and when the Rock Island Arsenal became a federal military reservation that remains an active US Army facility, the Quad Cities was not only provided with a wealth of traditions and heritage, but a business sense that created powerful industries still impacting the region. Chiropractic history began in 1895 with the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and today is the largest chiropractic college in the world. The main campus remains in Davenport with additional campuses in San Jose, California and Port Orange, Florida. Also supporting the Quad Cities region is Genesis Health System, providing patient care that dates back to 1869 and was one of the first community hospitals west of the Mississippi. Today this system services a 10-county, bi-state region of the Quad Cities and surrounding communities. Trinity Regional Health System is a three-campus health care provider located on the western border of Illinois & the eastern border of Iowa and includes a network of services including rural clinics and mental health facilities. Alcoa, Inc., the world’s third largest producer of aluminum, maintains a plant in the Quad Cities and is considered a major employer. Lee Enterprises is a publicly traded American media company that is headquartered in Davenport, Iowa. It publishes 56 newspapers in 23 states and more than 300 weekly, classified and specialty publications. Since the 1990’s the Quad Cities government, businesses, non-profits and residents have worked hard to redevelop the region and have achieved national attention for their accomplishments. Some examples of revitalization and rebirth include Davenport’s River Renaissance (downtown revitalization project) that includes a River Music History Center, and the Figge Art Museum; an attempted renewal of downtown Moline with the John Deere Commons facility and the I Wireless Center; and the title of most livable small city for Davenport and Rock Island awarded by the National Council of Mayors in 2007. |
